These Festival Weekends built round the first May Bank Holiday were started in 1990 and this year's theme concentrates on the music of Dvorak and his friend and mentor Brahms and their contemporaries. There are discoveries to be made as we share the artists' enthusiasms for Strauss and Novak for example. The Mahler centenary is also celebrated.
We are delighted to welcome back the Austrian pianist Gottlieb Wallisch who made such a great impression at the 2009 Weekend. From the Czech Republic comes the Smetana Piano Trio, led by violinist Jana Novakova who has been here several times and whose pianist Jitka Cechova will play the Dvorak Quintet with the Graffe Quartet.
Leamington Music is grateful to the Graffe Quartet for replacing the Apollon Quartet at short notice, following the Apollon Qurtet's temporary cancellation of all concerts through illness.
Among the British artists are a number of old friends. Robin Ireland, viola player of The Lindsays returns with the Primrose Piano Quartet. Cellist Gemma Rosefield was highly acclaimed at last year's Weekend and she again also plays as a member of Ensemble 360, without which no Weekend would be complete. Violinist Madeleine Mitchell and the Leeds Competition prizewinner Noriko Ogawa have also played in Leamington several times. The Piatti String Quartet, winner of the St Martin's Chamber Music Competition 2010, clarinettist Richard Hosford and organist Iain Quinn all play here for the first time. It all adds up to another Festival experience to be enjoyed by audiences and artists alike.
