Toward the Dawn
Stile Antico return to Warwick, bringing a new programme that charts a course from twilight to sunrise, echoing both the rhythms of church liturgy and the mediaeval experience of night – both seductive and unsettling in equal measure.
Taverner‘s mighty Ave Dei Patris Filia, based on a chant for Matins, stands at the end of a delicious sequence of sacred music, chansons, and madrigals by both English and Continental composers such as Tallis, Byrd, Lassus and Monteverdi, and featuring Allegri‘s ethereal Miserere Mei.
Stile Antico
A Renaissance Christmas
A sequence of music and poetry inspired by the service of Nine Lessons and Carols
For many, Christmas truly begins at the first carol service of the season. Each year, this magical sequence of music and readings gives new life to the story of the Prophets, the Annunciation, the birth of Christ, and the visits of the shepherds and Magi.
This year the challenges of COVID-19 have left many churches unable to hold their carol services. For all those who will miss these special occasions, Stile Antico presents a unique and beautiful sequence inspired by the traditional service of Nine Lessons and Carols. Masterpieces by some of the finest composers of the Renaissance alternate with intimate, metaphysical verse by poets such as John Donne and George Herbert, in place of readings from Scripture. From the joyful exuberance of Aleotti’s Angelus ad pastores ait to the wonder and simplicity of Victoria’s O
magnum mysterium, the hour-long performance is a veritable feast of words and music, culminating in John Sheppard’s spectacular setting of the famous passage from St John’s Gospel: “The word was made flesh and dwelt among us”.

Queen of Muses
Regular visitors to Warwick for over a decade, Stile Antico returns with an intriguing programme that explores the way music was used to gain favour with the the ‘Virgin Queen’, Elizabeth I, by courtiers and diplomats and even by suitors seeking to gain the royal hand in marriage. Along the way we meet foreign spies, disgraced favourites and plotting noblemen, illuminating the life of a court which rejoiced in some of the finest music ever created in England by Byrd, Farmer, Ferrabosco, de Lassus, Sandrin, Tallis, Taverner, Weelkes, Wilbye and Willaert.
“The singing is simply stunning” (The Times)
